Year 6 Discover Opera!

Royal Opera House Nights: Friends on Stage at ROH

Friday 16th October 2026

Year 6 had an exciting opportunity to take part in Discover Opera, an online live lesson delivered by the Royal Ballet and Opera.

During the lesson, the children watched LIVE performances of songs from famous operas, performed by talented artists from the Royal Opera. They also joined children from across the country to sing along to some well-known opera songs, creating a wonderful shared musical experience.

The pupils were taken behind the scenes to explore the fascinating props and costume departments, discovering how much creativity and teamwork goes into producing an opera. They also learnt how props, scenery and lighting can transform a stage and bring stories to life.

It was a fantastic opportunity for Year 6 to experience the magic of opera, develop their appreciation of the performing arts and discover what happens both on and off the stage.

Well done, Year 6, for embracing this wonderful musical experience!

Henley Literacy Festival Livestream with M. G. Leonard

Friday 9th October 2026

Henley Literary Festival - British Arts Festivals Association

Year 6 enjoyed taking part in a special literacy livestream with author M. G. Leonard!

M.G. LEONARD - Author Profile

During the event, we discovered how M. G. Leonard’s hobbies and interests inspire her writing. She told us about her love of birdwatching, train spotting and even her pet beetle! We learnt that inspiration for stories can come from the most unexpected places.

She also introduced us to her new Time Keys series, which explores the fascinating world of doors. To help with her research, she travelled to Egypt, Italy and Plymouth to explore different types of doors and gather ideas for her books.

The livestream gave us a wonderful insight into the life of an author and showed us how curiosity, research and our own interests can spark fantastic ideas for stories. Who knows what might inspire the next Year 6 author?

National Poetry Day: Wonder 🍂✨

Friday 2nd October 2026

This week, Year 6 celebrated National Poetry Day, exploring this year’s theme: Wonder.

We began by thinking about the wonderful world around us and how poetry can help us see ordinary things in extraordinary ways. Inspired by the changing season, the children focused on leaves and used their imaginations to bring them to life.

The children experimented with metaphors and similes, comparing leaves to everything from dancing butterflies and golden coins to tiny boats sailing through the air. They carefully selected vivid vocabulary to describe the colours, shapes and movements of leaves as they drifted, twirled and tumbled to the ground.

It was fantastic to see the children discovering that poetry can make us look at familiar things differently. Their poems captured the beauty and mystery of nature while showing just how creative their imaginations can be.

We are incredibly proud of the wonderful poems Year 6 created and the thoughtful ideas behind them.

Celebrating Day of Languages

Friday 25th September 2026

What a fantastic Languages Day we had!

Year 6 travelled around KS2, exploring three wonderful languages: Punjabi, Spanish, French and British Sign Language.

Our classroom was transformed into a wonderful French café for Languages Day! The children enjoyed delicious croissants while practising their French conversation skills.

Qu'est-ce que tu veux manger ?

Je voudrais un croissant, s'il vous plaît.

The children had lots of fun learning new words and phrases, joining in with enthusiastic chanting, practising their new language skills and taking part in exciting games.

It was brilliant to see everyone getting involved, having a go and discovering just how much fun learning a new language can be! We were particularly impressed by the children’s confidence, enthusiasm and willingness to try something new.

We are also pleased to announce our Sports Captains for this year:

Harman (Green): Bonnie (Yr5) and Beau (Yr5)

Stoner (Red): Aiden (Yr5) and Sam (Yr6)

Horne (Blue): Joaquin (Yr6) and Katie (Yr6)

Stone (Yellow): Imogen (Yr6) and Wren (Yr5)

Wonder

Friday 18th September 2026

This week, we have been settling into Year 6 and thinking about our first days in our new class. We read Wonder and explored how the characters felt when they faced new experiences, met new people and had to make important choices.

In English, we have been learning about the features of a recount. We looked at how recounts tell events in the order they happened and include details about who, where, when and what happened. We also practised using time connectives such as first, next, after that, later and finally to organise our writing.

We have been revisiting the simple past tense, using verbs such as walked, talked, arrived and felt to describe completed events. We also explored the past progressive tense, which helps us describe something that was happening at a particular moment in the past. For example: We were walking into the classroom when the bell rang.

We used these grammar skills to reflect on our own first days in Year 6. We thought about what we did, what we were doing, how we felt and what we noticed around us.

Reading Wonder has also encouraged us to think about kindness, friendship and how our actions can affect other people.

Examples of pupils using past tense:

During lunch, I was looking for Jack WIll. By Ana

Nervously, I was walking on the sidewalk while other children ran around me. by Freya

I was feeling worried about starting back at school. By William

Welcome Back

Friday 11th September 2026

What a fantastic first week back we have had!

This week, we have been getting to know each other, settling into our new routines and thinking about what it means to be part of our Year 6 classroom community. It has been wonderful to see everyone sharing ideas, catching up with our friends and getting ready for an exciting term ahead.

We have spent time talking, working together and completing activities designed to help us learn more about one another. We have discovered new interests, shared our hopes for Year 6 and started building the positive relationships that will help make our classroom a happy and supportive place to learn.

We know that Year 6 is an important year, and we are ready to take on new challenges, learn from our mistakes and celebrate our successes.

It has been a brilliant start to the year, and we are excited about everything that is still to come. We are looking forward to learning, laughing, growing and making lots of wonderful memories together.
