Year 5
Week 6
This week we have published our 'Overcoming a monster' stories, the children are excited to share them with you! We have also written and entered poems about 'Watlington Primary School' into a competition to be read at the unveiling of a community art sculpture on the 24th of October.
We also elected Alice and Max as our computing champions for the year!
Week 5
We have had a brilliant time putting all of our hard work together and creating our 'Overcoming a Monster' stories this week, we can't wait to finish publishing them and create a class book with them all in!
We also virtually attended the Henley Literacy Festival and heard from M G Leonard all about how she comes up with ideas for her books. Don't be concerned if they want to take a picture of a mysterious door, who knows what (or when) they'll find behind it!
This Friday we had our first family assembly where we shared a few of the poems the class created to celebrate the Harvest, the children read beautifully!
Lastly, we have been busy getting our Christmas cards ready for the holiday so be sure to keep an eye out for them!
Week 4
This week we celebrated World Poetry Day! We joined thousands of other schools in a live assembly featuring Michael Rosen to explore the theme of 'Wonder'. The children then enjoyed creating a class poem together using compound words.
In science, we tested our predictions about 'if the surface area is doubled will the time it takes to fall by half' by creating parachutes and dropping them from the climbing frame.
In English we have finished our innovation stage and are looking forward to planning and writing our very own 'Overcoming a Monster' stories!
Week 3
This week we celebrated European Day of Languages! The children experienced a French breakfast and learnt some Spanish conversational skills, Bhangra dancing and Makaton.
We also solidified our place value knowledge in Maths, learnt key grammar ready for our writing in English and planned our science experiment testing air resistance!
We are also pleased to announce our Sports Captains for this year:
Harman (Green): Bonnie (Yr5) and Beau (Yr5)
Stoner (Red): Aiden (Yr5) and Sam (Yr6)
Horne (Blue): Joaquin (Yr6) and Katie (Yr6)
Stone (Yellow): Imogen (Yr6) and Wren (Yr5)
Week 2
The children have been involved in some class democracy with students running for student council and sports captains. Thank you to all the adults who helped with the videos. Everyone did a fantastic job at showing off their Oracy skills! Sports captains will be announced on Monday, and I'm pleased to announce that Lucy and Joel will be Red Kites representatives for this year.
First week back!
Friday 11th September 2026
The Red Kites have had a great first week back! We have looked at our class and school values and learning expectations for the year.
In English, we had a mysterious delivery of dragon eggs. We can't wait to see what happens next!
In Maths, we have been recapping Roman Numerals and Place value to secure our number knowledge.
In Science, we learnt all about friction and its effects on objects.
In History and Art we learnt about who the Anglo-Saxons were and different pieces of Viking art.
