A Visit from Doni Brasco – Radio Presenter from Lyca Radio

 Year 6 had an exciting visit from Doni Brasco, a popular radio presenter from Lyca Radio. Doni came to talk to us about his work and what it’s like to be on the radio.

He began by telling us how he first got into radio presenting and what inspired him to follow this career. Doni explained that being a radio presenter isn’t just about talking it’s about connecting with people, keeping your energy high, and thinking quickly when things don’t go to plan.

Doni also shared the important skills he needs to do his job well. These include confidence, creativity, clear communication, and a great sense of humour. He said that making listeners smile and feel included is one of the best parts of his job.

Year 6 even got the chance to practice their own hosting skills, learning how to “THINK THE LINK” between segments and songs just like real radio presenters. It was a fun and challenging activity that helped everyone understand how much planning and quick thinking goes into every show.

Everyone in Year 6 agreed that Doni was talented, vibrant, and hilarious. His energy filled the room, and he made us laugh while teaching us a lot about the world of radio. By the end of the session, many of us were inspired to think about careers in media and broadcasting.

We’d like to thank Doni Brasco for visiting our class and sharing his time and enthusiasm with us it was truly an unforgettable experience.

Exploring Imaginary Worlds: Year 6 and the Magic of Figurative Language

Year 6 have been diving into the world of imagination and creativity, using figurative language to describe fantasy settings. From enchanted forests to dramatic mountain ranges and moonlit skies, the children have been learning how to craft vivid, atmospheric descriptions using powerful literary techniques.

They’ve explored a wide range of figurative language, including similes, metaphors and  personification, to bring their settings to life. Pupils were encouraged to think like authors choosing words carefully to create mood, spark imagination, and transport the reader to magical worlds.

Here are just a few of their fantastic examples:

  • “The sun rays tiptoed across the forest floor.”Lettie

  • “The mountains reached the sky as the lightning threatened the valley below.”Freddie

These rich and imaginative sentences will form the foundation for the children’s own fantasy stories next week. It’s been inspiring to see how each student has developed their own descriptive voice, while learning to appreciate the beauty and impact of carefully chosen language.

We can’t wait to see how their magical settings within their fantasy tales.

Pond Visits

Year 6 have been making the most of our beautiful school pond this term, visiting twice a week as part of our outdoor learning. 

During every visit, pupils bring their Pond Journals, where they write or draw about what they’ve seen, heard, and wondered. These journals are a space for creativity and scientific thinking, filled with labelled diagrams, thoughtful questions, and personal reflections.

Not only are these sessions a great way to learn about ecosystems, life cycles, and habitats, but they also offer a peaceful, mindful break from the classroom. The pond has become a place of inspiration, curiosity, and calm for everyone in Year 6.

We look forward to seeing how the pond continues to change as we move through the school year!

Exploring Square and Cube Numbers!

This week in Year 6, we’ve been diving into the fascinating world of square and cube numbers! To help us understand these mathematical concepts more clearly, we used physical cubes to build square and cube models and it really brought the learning to life.

We began by looking at square numbers, exploring how they are formed by multiplying a number by itself (e.g. 3 × 3 = 9). Using cubes, pupils created square arrays (like 4 rows of 4) to visually represent numbers like 4² = 16. This hands-on activity really helped cement the idea that square numbers form perfect squares.

Next, we moved on to cube numbers, where we multiply a number by itself twice (e.g. 2 × 2 × 2 = 8). Using our cubes again, we built cube-shaped structures perfect for showing how numbers like 3³ = 27 can be represented in 3D. The children enjoyed spotting the difference between square and cube models and challenged themselves to build increasingly larger cubes!

By using practical resources alongside our written work, Year 6 developed a stronger understanding of these key mathematical ideas. We’re so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the class has been, and we’re sure they’ll be spotting square and cube numbers everywhere now!

Languages Day 

On Friday we celebrated the rich diversity of languages spoken within the school. Pupils had the exciting opportunity to learn words and phrases from a variety of languages, shared by classmates, staff, and families. From learning words and phrases in Spanish, Tagalog, Japanese to Ukrainian, the school was filled with the sounds of different cultures coming together. The celebration not only helped pupils appreciate the many languages spoken amongst their peers but also encouraged respect, inclusion, and curiosity about the wider world.

Year 6 Science - Adaptation and Evolution

Objective: Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways, and understand that adaptation may lead to evolution.

Year 6 prepared a little presentation on living things in a particular Era. They researched  the era and  each group to present their presentation in this order: Mesozoic Era, Triassic period, Jurassic period and Cretaceous period. Some of the groups did a rap, poem and PowerPoint.

Our First Full Week in Year 6 Highlights

We’ve wrapped up our first full week of the school year, and what a great start it’s been! The classroom is already full of energy, curiosity, and a positive learning atmosphere.

Settling In & Building Our Classroom Community

This week, we focused on settling into our routines, learning classroom expectations, and getting to know one another. Through team-building games and thoughtful discussions, students have started building strong connections and a supportive class culture.

Learning Begins

We’ve also begun diving into our core subjects. From exploring place value in maths to learning comprehension strategies in reading and understanding features of a recount, they are already showing great focus and enthusiasm.

Congratulations to Mary, Ella and Sophie for being elected as School Council members. 

Well done to those who archived GOLD this week: Nimah, Matilda, Georgia, Logan and Lily.

It’s clear this is going to be a year full of growth and discovery!

The two days in Golden Eagles, we've been setting the tone for a successful year ahead. We've spent time getting to know each other, settling into our new routines, and learning about what it means to be the role models of the school. We’ve discussed our class rules, responsibilities, and how we can all contribute to a positive, respectful learning environment. The Golden Eagles have already shown great maturity and enthusiasm!
